Okay, so it was announced today that Evander Kane is going to undergo surgery and will be out for the remainder of the season. This is announced only days after the whole track suit fiasco. For those of you who are not familiar with the track suit fiasco, let me fill you in. The way I understand it is that on Tuesday Kane showed up to a team meeting in Vancouver in a track suit, which is a violation of the team dress code. Later while Kane was working out, Byfuglien took the track suit and threw it into a shower (some reports say hot tub) getting it all wet. When Kane discovered that his track suit was all wet he had a snit fit and announce that he wasn't going to play that night and then proceeded to leave the building. Management attempted to phone Kane and Kane hung up on them. As game time approached Kane called to say he was heading to the arena to play at which point coach Paul Maurice told him not to bother.
Since the track suit incident things have surfaced that suggest that there's a deep seeded issue between certain members of the Jets and Kane. In short, they aren't getting along. So what now? The Jet's management must make a decision immediately as to how to fill the gap the loss of Kane creates and then they also have to deal with the long term plans for Kane. Personally, it is my hope that the Jets hold on to Kane for the simple reason that they will have a tough time finding a 23 year old with his skill set. That being said, he needs to grow up and management needs to find ways to keep him on the same page as the rest of the team. Maybe this is ignorant, but I'm hoping that Kane will take this incident and use it to re-evaluate his approach to his team mates and perhaps go through some personal growth during his time off and be a new man when he reports back to the team months down the road. Like I said, it's probably ignorant, but it is what I'm hoping for!
